Our Story

Bryce and Alex have hearts that beat to serve. Both attending a Sisters of Mercy school from a young age, the two have been raised in an environment where excellence is the expectation. An education rooted in living out the mercy core values led to a secure desire to be a part of something bigger than themselves. They have found within their work through their middle and high school careers that the lack of enthusiasm for service seen within youth is highly faulted within an absence of ample opportunity and resources to thrive. In the fall of 2023, they co-founded Service Square with the foremost goal of providing a place to educate, provide opportunity, and ultimately normalize the utter importance of service within the world we live in.

In the eighth grade, Bryce learned through a school event about a global nonprofit organization called Thirst Project which works to provide clean water through the funding of wells, predominantly in low-income regions of Africa. He quickly took on the initiative, creating what today is a local nonprofit known as Williamsburg Area Thirst Project. Under his leadership, his team successfully achieved the initial goal of funding a well (a $12,00 project, funded entirely by fundraising efforts of WA Thirst Project), in the African country of Eswatini. The goal was set in the beginning stages over four years ago.

Alex is President of and runs Mercy Ministries (a schoolwide mission at their high school which was created to exemplify the mercy core values). Efforts are placed principally within actions of service, with the overarching goal of passing down the ongoing assignment. Within just her senior year, she organized and executed the cleaning up of the school’s prayer garden, initiated events working towards the funding of additional cleanup within the space, began partnering with a local retirement home to help provide joy within resident’s lives, and working with a local animal shelter. She also is an active member working alongside Bryce at the WA Thirst Project.

Service Square is the product of two busy high school students who firmly believe in putting others before themselves. Its founding was no easy feat, but the discipline the two have to achieve set goals is what continues to motivate them daily to move forward in their work. The joy that they find through serving others is one which they want nothing more than to share with the world and are beyond excited to get to live out their passion through Service Square.
